Our Curriculum
Our Secondary School is from year 7 to 12 following the English National Curriculum. We have carefully integrated our Nigerian values to make for richer learning. This integrated curriculum ensures that your children get the best of British and Nigeria education to prepare them to be global citizens ready to succeed in a very competitive world.
About TSS Secondary
The Shepherd School Secondary opened its doors in 2019 to welcome our first set of students from The Shepherd School Primary. Since then, the school is growing and developing into a full-fledged co-educational institution offering a blended curriculum to suit the learning styles of our learners. The school was formed upon a set of principles that underpins any school designed for the modern age. This includes values such as internationalism, respect, and the rule of law.
Education at The Shepherd School Secondary
The principles of teaching and learning at The Shepherd School are to:
- Provide a high-quality education in a safe, healthy and encouraging learning environment, using modern constructivist learning methods and material, to assist Students to reveal and develop the gifts and innate talents that they each possess.
- Provide a high standard of education in English to students so that they can have access to the wealth of information and variety of opportunities available today so that they will develop the values, skills and knowledge to enable them to participate as citizens and leaders of their communities and in the affairs of the world.
- Provide awareness of internationalism, diversity of culture, religion and traditions and show respect for the beliefs of all peoples of the planet.
- Provide an education that inculcates critical thinking, reflection and independence in learning.

Sports and Physical Education are integral components of a well-rounded education in TSS. Our students learn the importance of commitment, perseverance, teamwork, and respect while enjoying a wide range of opportunities for friendly competition. We are committed to helping each student establish life-long, healthy habits which focus on a commitment to exercise/fitness, nutrition, body image, and self-reflective practices.
TSS offers a range of sporting opportunities each term. All students participate in the following:

Cheerleading
The Performing Arts department is a hub of creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
The study of the Arts is rigorous, challenging, and a vital component of education, developing lifelong transferable skills including organisation, resilience, time management, communication, and emotional intelligence. It allows students to develop an understanding of themselves, the world around them, and their place in it. Students learn to make independent decisions while also collaborating with their peers.
The Performing Arts department follows a holistic pedagogy and focuses on the needs of each student in order for them to achieve and flourish. The study of different cultures and perspectives is intrinsic to the curriculum, as well as inter-curricular links with other departments.
There are many performing arts opportunities for students throughout the academic year, including:
- The annual school production, including backstage opportunities working in lighting, sound, technology, set, costume, makeup, and prop design.
Choir (and vocal music lessons led by specialist peripatetic teachers).
The scale, texture and even the smell of an artwork all combine to leave their mark on the viewer. These experiences can leave a lingering memory.
The variety and personality of the artworks and designs created in our Art and Design Studios are memorable in their scale and breadth, the vivacity of the textures, and detail and breadth of imagination.
We have a vast array of resources at our disposal. Whilst working with a wide variety of materials and resources is exciting, we also acknowledge that working with restricted materials can elicit wonderfully fruitful investigations of how limitations can lead to liberations.
As part of a lively curriculum, the Art and Design departments work alongside each other, as well as Science and Mathematics, to encapsulate all that creativity has to offer its students and the world of possibilities.

Cambridge Science

Mathematics knowledge includes the study of topics such as quantity (number theory), structure (algebra), space (geometry), and change (analysis). Civic Education
Civic Education covers issues that are important to the development and transformation of young Nigerians into responsible, responsive, and active citizens.

Social Studies is a subject that is mandatory for students from year 7 – 9 at the lower secondary school level. It is a subject that assists students to acquire the basic knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes needed to be responsible citizens and contributing members of society. Christian Religious Studies
Christian Religious Studies is a subject taught at the lower secondary level from (year 7 – 9). The subject covers a wide range of the Christian religion. It seeks to awaken the learner’s consciousness in imbibing moral virtues in society. Read more
History
The Shepherd Secondary School offers History as a subject that helps the students to strive in a world where changes are constant and learning never stops. Read more
Business Studies
Business Studies is a subject that equips the students with critical thinking skills and also fosters independence. Read more
Security Education
Security Education equips our students with massive security knowledge on how to detect, prevent and fight crimes in the society with critical thinking and technological skills, collaborate with other security agencies and local vigilante groups. Read more
English
students will develop skills and understanding in four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They will learn how to communicate effectively and respond to a range of information, media, and texts. Read more
Literature
the students will build competence in the three main genres: prose, drama and poetry. They will read, interpret, evaluate and respond to a range of literature in English. Read more
Home Economics
Students will explore the areas and the role of Home Economics in the development of individuals families and nation. They will learn to manage themselves, their resources and household as well as acquire essential life skills which will enable them to thrive and be productive individuals. Read more
Physical Education
Physical Education is a planned sequential standard-based program of curricular and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors of healthy active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy and emotional intelligence. Read more
Modern Foreign Language: French
All the students in TSS study French and sit the DELF Prim A1.1 and A1 exams in Key stage 2 and 3. Our aim is to enable them to understand and communicate in everyday situations and create interest and curiosity about the French language and the culture. It is also to introduce the basic vocabulary, give confidence to speak and to make the pupil feel at ease with the language.
How is French taught in TSS?
Our pedagogical system is based on personalised programmes and individual support for students. We have developed a method and a pace of progression as well as tailored activities so that each student can reach his/her set objectives according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (around 100 hours for levels A1 & A2, 150 hours from level B1).
Teaching materials used in class include recent Text and workbooks, audio and video documents, internet resources, literature and material specifically developed by our teachers. Activities promote communication so that students can adapt themselves to different types of situation (day-to-day, educational and social).
Classes are organised according to age grade following the Common European Framework of Reference’s learning objectives.
How can parents help?
- Inform yourself about local French resources.
Work in collaboration with the school and the French teacher. You can also connect your child with the local French resources in your area like the Institut Français.
- Expose your child to the language.
Some of the resources listed above may help. There are also many popular French films and books out there. For younger children or less advanced readers, Asterix et Obelix and Tintin are popular comics that both have video adaptations.
If your child loves movies, there are lots of films available online and in French centers to help build interest in the language. In addition to video, audio tapes and CDs can also be useful.
- Consider an immersion program.
Students can experience first-hand the French culture through immersion programs to a French-speaking country.
