Social Studies is a subject that is mandatory for students from year 7 – 9 at the lower secondary school level. It is a subject that assists students to acquire the basic knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed to be responsible citizens and contributing members of the society. It provides people the opportunity to understand their physical and human environment.

This subject helps to shape the student’s behaviour, growth, development, relationships and the various institutions they require to function and carry on their life smoothly. This is in cognizance of the fact that all aspects of life are inter-related and interdependent on one another. The knowledge gained in this subject equips the learners with the basic education and skills that serve as the foundation to consistently adapt to life changing situations.
