The year 4 child at the Shepherd School (age 8 – 9) is expected to enhance independent thinking and learning (the ability for the child to work on his own with confidence in what they can achieve) and ask constructive questions.
THE WIDER CURRICULUM
In year 4, the children learn some great topics in History, Geography, Science, Social Studies and other subjects that will help fire their imaginations, enhance their critical thinking and help the children to recall, comprehend, apply, analyse, synthesise, and evaluate. There is a deliberate emphasis on the 4Cs of the 21st century learning; Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical thinking.
ENGLISH
At the end of the session, the children should be able to communicate ideas in an organized, logical way, present writing to an audience using the appropriate intonation, controlling the tone and volume of their speech so that the meaning is clear. They should also infer meaning and justify it with evidence from the texts, use the dictionary to check the meanings of words that they have read. They should be able to use basic sentence punctuations and write legibly with regular sized letters.
MATH
In Year 4, pupils increasingly work around the four operations, concept of place value. They are taught and encouraged to develop mental and written methods in performing calculations accurately. They also learn to draw with increasing mathematical reasoning to analyze shapes and their properties. They memorize their times table up to eight, read and spell their mathematical vocabulary correctly.
SCIENCE
At the Shepherd School, following the Cambridge Curriculum, science is designed to support learners in developing life-long curiosity about the natural world and enables them to seek scientific explanations to the phenomena around them.
Learners develop a range of scientific skills, through Working Scientifically, alongside developing their scientific knowledge and understanding, through the strands of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
